Malvern-based CertainTeed, the building-products subsidiary of Saint-Gobain North America, a global sustainable-construction company, recently installed energy-efficient grinding control technology at its gypsum plant in Buchanan, New York.

The technology is expected to reduce the plant’s greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption by nearly 700,000 kilowatt hours annually. It is estimated the amount of carbon dioxide emissions that will be removed from the environment are equal to a gasoline-powered vehicle driving 1.2 million miles.

“This new technology in Buchanan will help our company maximize its positive impact for our customers and the communities where we do business while minimizing our environmental footprint,” said Jay Bachmann, CertainTeed Interior Products Group vice president and general manager. “Our team will continue to look for ways to reduce our consumption of energy and natural resources while delivering more of our industry-leading gypsum wallboard to the market at a time of unprecedented customer demand.”

The facility produces gypsum wallboard by grinding gypsum rock into powder. Grinding control technology gives workers the ability to slow down or speed up grinding at different rates.

The installation is part of a strategy to reduce Saint-Gobain’s energy consumption and emissions.

In 2019, the plant installed a nearly 7,000-panel solar array on its roof.
